🏛️ Understanding Venice’s New Access Fee (2025)
Starting April 18, 2025, Venice has introduced a new Access Fee for day-trippers visiting the historic city center. This initiative aims to manage overtourism and preserve the city’s fragile beauty for future generations.
Here’s everything you need to know before you visit. 👇
📅 When and Where Does the Fee Apply?
- Applicable Dates: The fee is enforced on 54 specific days between April 18 and July 27, 2025 — mostly weekends and public holidays.
- Time Frame: Daily from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM on the specified dates.
- Geographical Scope: The fee applies to entry into Venice’s historic center only. It does not apply to other lagoon islands such as Murano, Burano, or Lido.
💶 How Much Is the Fee?
- Standard Rate: €5 per person — if booked at least four days in advance.
- Last-Minute Rate: €10 per person — if booked within three days of the visit.
Children under 14, residents, and overnight guests are usually exempt (see below).
👥 Who Needs to Pay?
The Access Fee applies to day visitors entering Venice’s historic center during the specified dates and times. If you’re staying overnight in Venice (in a hotel, B&B, or apartment), the city tax you already pay covers your stay — no extra Access Fee required.
✅ Who Is Exempt?
Certain groups are exempt but must still register to obtain an exemption certificate:
- 🏨 Overnight guests staying within the Municipality of Venice
- 🏠 Residents of Venice and the Veneto Region
- 👧 Children under 14 years old
- 🎓 Students and workers commuting to Venice
- ♿ Individuals with disabilities and their companions
- ⚕️ Visitors attending medical appointments or legal proceedings
- 🚤 Participants in major events like the Venice Boat Show (May 30 – June 2) and the Vogalonga (June 8)
Note: Even if you qualify for an exemption, you must register in advance to obtain your free certificate.
🖥️ How to Register and Pay
- Visit the official portal: cda.ve.it (available in multiple languages).
- Select your visit date.
- Enter visitor details for each person in your group.
- Pay the applicable fee via credit card or PayPal.
- Receive your QR code by email — this is your proof of payment or exemption.
Keep the QR code (printed or digital) handy during your visit — stewards may ask to scan it at entry points.
🚉 On-the-Spot Registration
If you haven’t registered in advance, you can do so upon arrival at:
- Piazzale Roma
- Santa Lucia Train Station
- Authorized tobacconists (PuntoLis)
Note: Same-day registration will incur the higher fee of €10.
⚖️ Enforcement and Penalties
Stewards will conduct random checks at major access points. Visitors without a valid QR code may face fines between €50 and €300 — plus the maximum Access Fee.
🌍 Why Venice Introduced the Access Fee
The new system is designed to:
- 📊 Manage tourist flows during peak periods
- 🏨 Encourage longer, more meaningful stays
- 💰 Fund maintenance and preservation of Venice’s cultural and architectural heritage
In short: the fee supports a more sustainable and respectful way to experience Venice.
💡 Final Tips for Visitors
- ✅ Plan ahead: Register early to pay the lower €5 rate.
- 📱 Carry your QR code: Have it ready (digital or printed) during your visit.
- 🔎 Check exemptions: Even if you qualify, register to obtain your exemption certificate.
