Venice is a unique and fascinating city, built on more than 120 islands and connected by over 400 bridges and 150 canals. However, this extraordinary layout also presents several challenges for visitors with mobility issues.
Many areas of the city feature numerous steps, narrow alleys, and bridges without ramps, making navigation difficult for those using a wheelchair or experiencing mobility difficulties. Additionally, the city’s water-based transportation system is not fully accessible. Most docks are not equipped with special platforms to facilitate boarding and disembarking from water taxis. Even for able-bodied travelers, getting on and off boats or gondolas can be tricky, especially when the water level is extremely high or low, as this can create significant height differences.
That said, there are some accessible routes and adapted services available. If you are planning to visit Venice and have mobility concerns, careful preparation and assistance are highly recommended to ensure a smoother experience.

Depending on your location and mobile provider, using your phone while traveling may be affordable. We recommend checking with your provider, as many plans offer international roaming for as little as $10 per day—or even for free (such as with T-Mobile). Additionally, we highly suggest downloading WhatsApp while in Europe. You can use it to message and call over Wi-Fi, even when offline. In Europe, WhatsApp is the primary messaging app, regardless of whether someone has an iPhone or another device.
Gratuities are not included in the price, but they are always appreciated! Tipping in Italy is not mandatory as it is in the U.S., so it’s entirely up to you. While drivers and guides do not expect tips and won’t be offended if you choose not to give one, they will certainly be grateful if you do! It’s a wonderful way to show your appreciation for excellent service.
Yes! When entering religious sites anywhere in Italy you need to cover shoulders, arms, stomachs and knees out of respect for a place of worship. We also suggest comfortable walking shoes.
There’s no simple answer to this—it really depends on what matters most to you: weather, avoiding crowds, or saving money.
For pleasant weather, the best time to visit is between April and mid-to-late October. If you prefer milder temperatures, consider late March, April, May, early June, late September, or October. If you love the sun and a true summer experience, then late June, July, August, or early September are ideal. However, keep in mind that weather has become more unpredictable in recent years, so rain is always a possibility.
To avoid crowds and save money, it’s best to skip peak season—which includes May, June, early July, September, and early October. During these months, popular attractions are the busiest, and hotel prices can be up to 50% higher than in low season.
Choosing the right time to visit depends on your priorities, but Venice always offers something magical no matter when you come!
